Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr have come under heavy scrutiny following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal as Real Madrid head coach, with claims emerging that the two star forwards were central figures in a player-led rebellion that undermined the manager’s authority.
Mbappe, in particular, has been criticised after video footage surfaced appearing to show him ignoring Alonso’s instructions during the aftermath of Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona. The 3–2 loss, played in Saudi Arabia, proved to be Alonso’s final match in charge, with the club confirming his sacking on Monday night. Former Madrid and Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa was swiftly announced as his replacement.
The incident occurred during the post-match ceremony as Barcelona prepared to receive their medals and lift the trophy. Earlier, the Catalan side had formed a guard of honour for Madrid as they collected their runners-up medals. When it was Madrid’s turn to return the gesture, Mbappe was seen directing teammates not to line up for Barcelona.
A widely shared clip on social media shows Alonso urging his players to proceed with the guard of honour. Mbappe reacts angrily, raising his arms in frustration before walking away. Moments later, Alonso appears to abandon his instruction and follows the French forward, a scene many believe symbolised his diminishing control over the dressing room.
Dressing Room Revolt
For several analysts, the moment captured the deeper issues Alonso faced throughout his short reign. Reports had already suggested growing tension between the coach and influential players, with Vinicius Jr allegedly expressing dissatisfaction with Alonso’s leadership. Some claims even suggest the Brazilian winger informed club president Florentino Perez that he would not consider renewing his contract if Alonso remained in charge.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague weighed in on the footage, stating: “After this, Xabi must have thought, ‘No, this won’t work here.’” His comments echoed a broader belief that Alonso had lost the backing of key figures within the squad.
Additional footage from the ceremony showed Mbappe discouraging teammates from applauding Barcelona on multiple occasions. Eventually, the Real Madrid players left the pitch entirely, opting not to stay and watch their rivals celebrate the title.
Despite the visible tension, Mbappe struck a conciliatory tone after Alonso’s departure. In a message shared publicly, he thanked the former midfielder for his guidance, praising his footballing knowledge and leadership ideas while wishing him success in the next phase of his career.
While the gesture suggested respect on a personal level, questions remain over whether player power ultimately hastened Alonso’s downfall at the Santiago Bernabeu.
