Senegal’s unforgettable Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2025 delivered far more than continental bragging rights, as the Lions of Teranga also secured an unprecedented financial reward for their efforts.
Crowned champions after a dramatic final against hosts Morocco in Rabat, Senegal capped off a memorable tournament that reinforced their status as Africa’s dominant football force. Beyond lifting the coveted AFCON trophy, the victory marked a major economic milestone for Senegalese football, with record prize money flowing into the federation’s coffers.
AFCON 2025: Senegal Secure a Record-Breaking Payday
Senegal’s narrow 1-0 win over Morocco earned them a massive $10 million winners’ prize, the highest payout ever awarded at the Africa Cup of Nations. The figure represents a significant increase from the $7 million handed to champions at the previous edition, reflecting CAF’s ongoing strategy to elevate the tournament’s global profile and commercial appeal.
In addition to the champions’ bonus, Senegal also benefited from accumulated participation and performance rewards across the group and knockout stages. When all incentives are combined, estimates indicate that the Senegalese Football Federation could take home roughly $11.6 million from the tournament.
This historic financial boost is expected to have long-term benefits, particularly in upgrading football infrastructure, strengthening grassroots programs, and investing in youth development systems across the country.
AFCON 2025 Final: Senegal vs Morocco – A Night of High Drama
While Senegal ultimately celebrated, the final itself was anything but straightforward and featured one of the most controversial moments seen on an AFCON stage.
Late in regulation time, with the score still deadlocked at 0-0, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR review ruled that El Hadji Malick Diouf had fouled Brahim Diaz in the box. The decision triggered furious protests from the Senegalese technical bench.
In a rare and dramatic gesture, head coach Pape Thiaw instructed his players to leave the field in protest. Play was suspended for close to ten minutes as several Senegal players moved toward the tunnel, threatening to abandon the match entirely. Captain Sadio Mané eventually intervened, persuading his teammates to return and see out the contest.
The tension peaked when Diaz attempted an audacious Panenka penalty, only for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to calmly gather the chipped effort, keeping Senegal alive and sending the game into extra time.
Buoyed by that escape, Senegal struck decisively in the 105th minute when Pape Gueye fired home the winning goal, stunning the home supporters and sealing Senegal’s second AFCON crown in unforgettable fashion.
