Collins Sichenje has opened up on how his journey with the Harambee Stars played a key role in preparing him for the next chapter of his career at Charlton Athletic.
The Kenyan international defender has spoken publicly for the first time since completing his move to English Championship side Charlton Athletic. Sichenje joined the London-based club from Serbian outfit FK Vojvodina in a deal whose financial details were not disclosed.
Charlton Athletic had identified Sichenje as a priority defensive target and moved swiftly to secure his services, finalising the transfer earlier than initially planned. The club’s confidence in the 22-year-old reflects the progress he has made in recent seasons, both at club level in Europe and on the international stage with Kenya.
Now settled in England, Sichenje says he is eager to make an immediate impact, drawing motivation from discussions with Charlton manager Nathan Jones and the lessons he has picked up while representing Harambee Stars.
Collins Sichenje Reveals How Playing for Kenya Shaped His Career
Sichenje believes that featuring for the Kenyan national team at a young age significantly accelerated his development as a professional footballer. According to the defender, early exposure to senior international football forced him to mature quickly and sharpen his understanding of the game.
He explained that competing against experienced opponents on the international stage helped him build confidence, discipline, and resilience—qualities he now considers vital as he steps into the demanding environment of English football.
“Yeah, it’s been a good experience to get those minutes at such a young age, and it’s helped me gain experience in games, so I have learned a lot from those games and just keep working,” Sichenje told Charlton Athletic media.
The former Vojvodina defender described his move to Charlton as a special and motivating moment in his career. He pointed to the club’s ambition, long-term vision, and competitive environment as key reasons he is excited to begin this new chapter.
Sichenje sees the transfer as a major milestone that offers him the chance to continue improving while also contributing meaningfully to the team’s objectives. He emphasised that staying focused, humble, and hardworking remains central to his approach.
“It feels amazing to be here. It’s a good club with good projects, and I’m ready to start working. It’s a big step for my career, and it’s a good opportunity to keep working and developing and help the team,” he added.
The Kenyan international also highlighted his playing attributes, describing himself as a vocal and aggressive defender who enjoys taking responsibility on the pitch.
“You just need to be humble and keep working. That’s the goal. Yeah, I’m fast, I’m aggressive, I’m talkative on the pitch, I’m like a leader, so, yeah.”
Collins Sichenje: The Manager Has a Lot of Faith
Sichenje revealed that Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has shown strong belief in him from the moment he arrived at the club. The defender said the manager clearly communicated his expectations, which helped him settle quickly and understand his role within the squad.
He noted that adapting to the club’s high-intensity training sessions has been demanding but rewarding, allowing him to adjust rapidly to the pace and physicality required in the Championship.
Sichenje also praised the positive atmosphere within the Charlton squad, crediting the energy and motivation of his teammates for making his transition smoother.
“Yeah, the manager has a lot of faith and belief, so he told me what I need to do, the right things, you know, and I started to learn and adapt quickly. Yeah, the first impression is good,” he explained.
“The training is intense, good. So, the lads are good. Everyone is motivated and has good energy, so I’m happy to be here. I can’t wait to play because I’ve been looking forward to this and I’m ready to go.”
With confidence from his international background and belief from his new manager, Sichenje now looks poised to take on the challenge of English football and continue his upward career trajectory.
