Kenyan athletes Hellen Obiri, Peres Jepchirchir, and Joyciline Jepkosgei have received a timely advantage ahead of the 2026 London Marathon following the withdrawal of one of their strongest competitors.
Olympic champion Sifan Hassan has confirmed she will miss next month’s race due to injury, dealing a significant shift to the women’s elite field. The Dutch star, who had been targeting another London title after her 2023 victory, will not line up on April 26 because of an Achilles issue.
Sharing the update on social media, Hassan expressed her disappointment at missing a race that holds personal significance, noting that her current condition would not allow her to compete at her best. Her absence removes a major contender from what was already a highly competitive lineup.
The development could work in favor of several top athletes, including defending champion and women-only world record holder Tigist Assefa, as well as Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir, Obiri, and Jepkosgei. With Hassan out, the race for top honors becomes more open, giving the Kenyan trio a stronger shot at victory.
Top Contenders Set for London Showdown
Assefa has established herself as one of the most dominant marathoners in recent years. Since making her major debut in 2022, she has claimed two Berlin Marathon titles and set a then-world record of 2:11:53 in 2023. She also holds the current women-only world record after clocking 2:15:50 in London. Impressively, she has never finished outside the top two in six major marathon appearances.
Despite her consistency, Assefa has faced stiff resistance from familiar rivals. Jepchirchir edged her in a thrilling sprint finish at the 2024 London Marathon and followed it up with another narrow victory at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. Their rivalry is expected to remain one of the key storylines heading into this year’s race.
Kenya’s chances are further strengthened by the form of Jepkosgei and Obiri. Jepkosgei, a past London champion, recently delivered one of the fastest marathon times in history to win in Valencia, underlining her strong form. Meanwhile, Obiri will be making her London debut, bringing with her an impressive résumé that includes multiple wins in Boston and New York, as well as an Olympic bronze medal.
With Hassan no longer in contention, the spotlight shifts to Assefa as the primary rival. The Kenyan trio will now be aiming to capitalize on the opportunity and challenge for top honors in what promises to be another fiercely contested London Marathon.
