Victor Wanyama has shared his thoughts on the factors he believes contributed to the dramatic decline of Dele Alli, a player once considered among England’s brightest football talents.
At the height of his powers, Dele Alli looked destined for greatness.
The former MK Dons academy graduate burst onto the scene after securing a move to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2015, officially linking up with the squad later that year. Under Mauricio Pochettino, he quickly became a standout performer and one of the most exciting young players in the Premier League.
During his first three seasons in North London, Alli delivered consistent top-level performances. He scored regularly, created numerous chances, and played a key role in pushing Tottenham into serious title contention on two occasions. He was also instrumental in the club’s run to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
Over a seven-year spell at Spurs, Alli made 269 appearances, scoring 67 goals and providing 57 assists. However, the bulk of those contributions came within his first five years. In the final stages of his time at the club, his influence declined sharply, with a noticeable drop in form and fitness. Questions about his attitude and dedication also began to surface, particularly under then-manager Jose Mourinho.
Wanyama Points to Key Factors Behind Alli’s Decline
In 2022, Alli left Tottenham for Everton, but by then, his career was already on a downward trajectory. Once a two-time PFA Young Player of the Year, he found himself battling inconsistency, criticism over discipline, and well-documented mental health challenges.
Victor Wanyama, who played alongside Alli at Tottenham between 2016 and 2020, witnessed his talent up close. The former Harambee Stars captain believes external influences played a significant role in his teammate’s struggles.
“Dele Alli was an incredible talent and often the difference-maker in games,” Wanyama said during an appearance on the Obi One podcast.
“He had that ability to produce something out of nothing and win matches on his own. But the people around you matter a lot. If your environment doesn’t give you peace of mind, and you’re not mentally settled, it becomes very difficult to perform. I really feel for him.”
Is There Still Hope for a Comeback?
Alli’s move to Everton failed to reignite his career, and after just over a year, he was loaned to Turkish side Besiktas. His stint there lasted a season before he returned to Everton, still searching for form.
In January 2025, he signed with Italian club Como in another attempt to revive his career. However, his time there got off to a difficult start. After waiting until March to make his debut, he was sent off for a reckless challenge on Ruben Loftus-Cheek. That proved to be his only appearance, as his contract was terminated just six months later.
Since then, Alli has remained without a club, with many teams hesitant to take a chance on him despite his undeniable talent.
Wanyama, however, believes the 29-year-old still has something to offer if given the right support system.
“I still think Dele Alli can perform at a high level,” he added. “What he needs is someone who truly supports him—someone who can guide him, take care of him, and help him rediscover his confidence.”
While his career has taken an unexpected turn, there remains a sense that, with the right environment, Alli could still script a remarkable comeback.
