Ryan Ogam: Harambee Stars Striker’s Wolfsberger AC Struggles Raise AFCON 2027 Concerns

Ryan Ogam’s reduced involvement at Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC is fast becoming a talking point for Harambee Stars, especially with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) drawing closer.

The meteoric rise of the Kenyan striker has encountered its first real obstacle since his move to Europe. After completing a much-publicised transfer from Tusker FC to Wolfsberger AC in September 2025, Ogam has had to adjust not only to a new league and environment but also to an unfamiliar role watching games from the sidelines. While his potential is not in doubt, the timing of his limited minutes could hardly be worse for both club and country.

Ryan Ogam: From Local Hero to European Struggles

Ogam arrived in Austria with significant expectations after a devastating spell in the FKF Premier League. During his final season with Tusker FC, the striker netted 15 goals in just 17 matches, a return that made him one of the most coveted players in East African football.

His reputation was further enhanced by decisive performances for Harambee Stars, where his goals against Morocco and Zambia at the 2024 African Nations tournament announced him as a forward capable of delivering on the big stage. Many fans and pundits quickly tipped him as the natural successor to long-time captain Michael Olunga.

However, life in the Austrian top flight has proved demanding. Since joining Wolfsberger AC, Ogam has struggled to force his way into the starting line-up. Although he has featured off the bench, including a debut appearance against Grazer AK, regular starts have been hard to come by. For a striker who was once guaranteed a starting role in Nairobi, the lack of consistent minutes represents a sobering adjustment to European football.

Ryan Ogam: Managing Life in Austria

Despite the challenges, Ogam remains measured and determined to grow through the experience. Reflecting on his early months in Austria, the striker admitted that adaptation has been a process, both on and off the pitch.

“Life has been good so far. I’m still adjusting to the weather because it’s really cold, but everything is improving day by day,” Ogam said. “What really stands out is the organisation and professionalism. The systems here are very well structured compared to back home. We are trying in Kenya, but the level here is higher and it demands discipline.”

The forward has not abandoned his personal ambitions either. He has set himself a target of scoring 10 goals in his debut season, insisting that confidence will grow once he opens his account. According to Ogam, getting that first goal could be the spark needed to unlock his full potential.

Ryan Ogam’s Situation Places Benni McCarthy in a Critical Position

Ogam’s club struggles also present a dilemma for Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy. While McCarthy values the striker’s commitment and previous contributions, a forward lacking regular game time risks losing sharpness at international level.

As McCarthy works to assemble a squad capable of competing with Africa’s elite, the absence of competitive rhythm for one of his attacking options is far from ideal. With Kenya set to co-host AFCON 2027, the margin for error is slim, and preparation will be key.

If Ogam’s situation at Wolfsberger AC does not improve, difficult decisions may lie ahead. A loan move or change of environment could become necessary to guarantee regular football and maintain match fitness.

For Kenya to make a meaningful impact at AFCON 2027, they will need the ruthless Ryan Ogam who lit up the FKF Premier League — not a striker struggling for minutes on the European bench.
