Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Co Set for Major Boost as Kipchoge Keino Stadium Construction Resumes

The restart of construction at Kipchoge Keino Stadium is poised to deliver a huge advantage to Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and a host of other Kenyan stars seeking world-class training and competition facilities.

The Kenyan government has officially resumed work on the long-stalled Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Once complete, the modern arena will accommodate 15,000 fans and is expected to become one of the country’s premier sporting venues.

Speaking during a site inspection on Friday, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo confirmed that the project, which has taken more than ten years, is now back on track and targeted for completion in 2026.

“I want to report that the overall progress is at 33% and within the timelines,” Kilimo said, as quoted by Citizen Digital.

“We have a clear schedule, and we are confident the stadium will be completed as planned,” he added, expressing optimism that the delays that plagued the project in the past will no longer hinder its progress.

Kilimo further explained that the facility will meet global standards across multiple sports. The stadium will feature a FIFA-compliant pitch and a modern tartan track certified by World Athletics, ensuring Kenyan athletes can compete and prepare on surfaces that match international requirements.

The venue is named after Kenyan legend Kipchoge Keino, who won Olympic gold in 1968 and helped put Kenya on the global athletics map. However, the stadium has remained largely unused since hosting national trials ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii praised the visible progress and said the development reflects the region’s rich sporting heritage.

“I can see the contractor has done commendable work, and there is clear progress on site,” Bii said. “As the county of champions, we are proud to finally see meaningful development taking place.”

He emphasized that North Rift counties have produced countless champions over the decades but lacked infrastructure that reflects their success.

The Ksh 3 billion project is currently being handled by Synohydro Corporation, which resumed construction after an inspection visit by President William Ruto and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in January.

Once complete, the stadium is expected to play a key role in nurturing future champions and restoring Kenya’s status as a global athletics powerhouse.
