Faith Kipyegon launched her 10km road career in style, storming to victory in Monaco and signalling that more appearances over the distance could be on the horizon.
The four-time world 1500m champion strengthened her reputation as one of the finest distance runners of her generation with a commanding performance at the Monaco Run on Sunday, February 15. Competing in her first-ever 10km race, Kipyegon delivered a masterclass display, proving that her brilliance on the track easily translates to the roads.
The three-time Olympic 1500m champion stopped the clock at 29:46 to take top honours in the women’s race. She finished well ahead of Maddie Jordan-Lee and Augustine Emeraux, who recorded times of 34:23 and 34:49 respectively.
In the men’s race, Bernard Soi posted a time of 29:47. Remarkably, that placed him just behind Kipyegon overall. Yonah Mateiko secured second place in 29:48, while Theo Le Boudec completed the podium positions with a time of 31:57.
Faith Kipyegon Reacts to 10km Debut
Following her impressive win, Kipyegon took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone and thank the event organisers. She expressed appreciation for the smooth organisation of the race and the support she received from fans.
Describing the experience as special, the former world 5000m champion hinted that this debut may only be the beginning of her journey in road racing.
“What a beautiful morning! Grateful for my 29:47 10k debut on the roads and already looking forward to more. Thanks a lot to @monacorun for the organisation and to everyone for the support!,” she wrote.
Her Monaco triumph adds to what has already been a remarkable 2025 season. In July, Kipyegon broke her own 1500m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, clocking an astonishing 3:48.68.
She continued her dominance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, claiming a historic fourth consecutive world title in the 1500m with a winning time of 3:52.15. Expanding her range even further, she set a new African record in the 3000m at 8:07.04 and earned silver in the 5000m.
Another highlight of her season was the ambitious ‘Breaking4’ mile attempt in Paris, where she ran 4:06.42 — the fastest mile ever recorded by a woman — narrowly missing the elusive sub-four-minute mark.
