Nicholas Musonye has expressed strong belief in Kenya’s ability to host AFCON 2027, pointing to the experience gained from staging CHAN 2024 as a major reason for that confidence.
Nicholas Musonye, chairman of the AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee, explained why the team is optimistic about delivering a successful continental tournament in two years’ time.
According to Musonye, hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) offered invaluable lessons, especially in the area of security planning, which he described as one of the most critical aspects ahead of the 2027 showpiece.
He acknowledged that organisers did not initially anticipate the massive fan turnout witnessed during CHAN 2024. However, he stressed that the experience of managing those unexpected numbers has left them better equipped to handle the larger scale of AFCON 2027.
Lessons from CHAN 2024
Musonye described the recently concluded African Nations Championship as a significant achievement. While he avoided overstating its success, he maintained that the tournament met expectations and demonstrated Kenya’s growing capacity to host major competitions.
He noted that journalists and stakeholders who followed the event were able to observe firsthand how it was organised and executed, suggesting that the smooth running of operations spoke louder than any praise.
The tournament, he said, marked an important milestone for the country, as it had been many years since Kenya last hosted an event of such magnitude. In his view, the nation rose to the challenge and delivered a competition worthy of continental attention.
Musonye also highlighted the impressive attendance figures recorded during the championship. He pointed out that Kenya attracted more fans than co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania combined, underlining the strong local support for football.
He singled out the atmosphere at Moi International Sports Centre as clear evidence of Kenya’s ability to mobilise large crowds and generate a vibrant matchday experience. For him, the packed stands were an encouraging sign ahead of preparations for AFCON 2027.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Musonye reflected on the broader organisation of the tournament, including team logistics, transport coordination and accommodation arrangements. He said participating teams raised no significant complaints, which he viewed as confirmation that planning efforts were largely effective.
Addressing Security Challenges
Despite the positives, Musonye admitted that security posed early challenges. Organisers were surprised by the overwhelming turnout during the opening matches at Kasarani, where the sheer number of fans created pressure at entry points.
As a result, some supporters gained access to the stadium without proper clearance. Musonye explained that such issues can arise when demand exceeds projections, particularly after years without hosting a tournament of that scale.
He emphasised that the committee responded quickly. Security measures were reinforced, and designated fan zones were introduced to accommodate those unable to secure tickets. These adjustments helped ease congestion, restore order and prevent similar incidents in subsequent matches.
According to Musonye, the swift response demonstrated the committee’s ability to adapt under pressure. Rather than viewing the situation as a setback, he considers it a valuable learning experience that has sharpened preparations for AFCON 2027.
In his assessment, CHAN ultimately proved successful and served as a major confidence booster. The tournament showed that Kenya can coordinate large-scale logistics, manage enthusiastic crowds and implement corrective measures when necessary.
Musonye concluded by thanking the government for its strong backing throughout the process. He maintained that with continued collaboration, improved planning and lessons drawn from CHAN, Kenya is firmly on course to host a well-organised and memorable AFCON 2027.
