Harambee Stars teenage sensation Aldrine Kibet delivered a standout performance on Wednesday, scoring a goal and providing an assist to propel Celta Vigo U19 into the semi-finals of the Spanish U19 King’s Cup.
The Kenyan midfielder continued his impressive run of form, netting his third goal in as many matches as he inspired his side to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Athletic Club. Kibet’s influence was evident throughout the contest, as Celta Vigo showed resilience and composure to overturn an early deficit.
Kibet Delivers Decisive Impact
Athletic Club struck first in the 26th minute through Danel Narvarte, placing early pressure on Celta Vigo. However, the visitors responded with renewed intensity, led by the energetic Kibet. Just ten minutes later, the talented midfielder produced a calm and clinical finish to restore parity, igniting Celta Vigo’s push for control of the game.
The equaliser shifted momentum, with Celta Vigo growing in confidence and creating several promising opportunities. Their persistence and tactical discipline ensured they remained in contention while limiting Athletic Club’s attacking threat.
Kibet Provides Sublime Assist
Celta Vigo finally found the breakthrough in the 68th minute, and once again, Kibet was at the heart of the action. The former St Anthony’s Boys Kitale star delivered a perfectly weighted outside-of-the-boot pass to Angel Davila Outerelo, who finished with precision to put his side ahead.
The assist showcased Kibet’s vision and technical ability, drawing widespread praise from teammates and fans alike. Although he was substituted late in the match, his contributions had already secured a crucial advantage. Celta Vigo maintained their composure in the closing stages to clinch a 2-1 victory and confirm their place in the semi-finals.
Boost for Benni McCarthy and Harambee Stars
Kibet’s outstanding display continues a rich vein of form in recent weeks. Earlier this month, he struck twice within four minutes during a commanding 3-0 win over SD Compostela. He was also on target in a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Atletico Madrid that sealed a quarter-final berth.
Since joining Celta Vigo from Tarragona-based Nastic Academy last July, the 19-year-old has adapted seamlessly, becoming an influential figure in midfield. His growing confidence and consistent goal contributions underline his rapid development in Spanish football.
For Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, Kibet’s progress is a welcome boost. Having earned his maiden senior call-up last November for friendly matches against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal, the youngster is emerging as a key prospect for Kenya. With continued development, he could play a pivotal role in the national team’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
