Charlton Athletic coach Nathan Jones has heaped praise on Collins Sichenje after the Harambee Stars defender delivered an outstanding performance on his debut and earned the Man of the Match award through a fan vote.
Jones spoke highly of the Kenyan international following his first appearance for the club on Saturday, highlighting how well he adapted despite limited recent match action. Sichenje was handed a starting role as Charlton travelled to face Southampton in a tough away fixture at St Mary’s Stadium. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Charlton showing resilience to recover after conceding first.
Operating as a right wing-back in a system that featured three central defenders, Sichenje delivered a disciplined and confident display. He handled his defensive responsibilities well, keeping Southampton’s attacking players under control while also contributing to Charlton’s overall shape and balance. His composure and work rate stood out, especially considering it was his first outing for the side.
What Did Jones Say About Collins Sichenje?
Jones expressed his excitement at Sichenje’s performance, especially given that the defender had not featured in the previous three matches since joining the club in January.
“Magnificent, to make his debut away at Southampton. To come into it without playing for a little while – he was wonderful,” Jones said via the club’s official media channels.
The coach also praised the supporters for their role during the match, acknowledging their energy and encouragement throughout the contest. His comments reflected not only satisfaction with the team’s result but also pride in how new players like Sichenje were stepping up when given the opportunity.
Sichenje quickly built a strong connection with the fans. Supporters even created a chant in his honour, showing how impressed they were with his contribution so early in his Charlton career.
Kenyan Defender Voted Man of The Match
Sichenje’s performance was further recognised when he won the club’s Man of the Match vote. He was shortlisted alongside teammates including goal scorer Sonny Carey, midfielder Greg Docherty, and defender Lloyd Jones. However, by Sunday morning, Sichenje had secured close to 90 percent of the total votes, showing overwhelming support from the fanbase.
The Kenyan defender also shared his happiness after the match, expressing pride in helping the team secure an important point away from home. He emphasised his desire to keep improving and contributing, especially with another key fixture coming up against West Bromwich Albion.
“It feels amazing to be on the pitch and help the team get a very big point for us, so it is a step to keep working and focus on Tuesday’s game,” he said.
He added that the match was challenging but enjoyable, noting that he trusted his ability and was glad to prove himself when given the chance.
