Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama is poised for a nostalgic return to Southampton, ten years after departing the club where he made history and cemented his legacy.
Wanyama last featured for Southampton in 2016, and a decade on, he is preparing to step back onto the turf at St Mary’s Stadium. The Kenyan midfielder enjoyed a memorable three-year spell with the Saints after completing a reported £12.5 million move from Celtic in the summer of 2013. That transfer saw him become the first Kenyan to compete in the English Premier League, marking a significant milestone for Kenyan football.
During his time on the south coast, Wanyama established himself as a key figure in midfield. His commanding performances and consistency quickly endeared him to supporters. Under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, Southampton transformed from relegation battlers into one of the league’s most competitive sides, finishing eighth in the top flight — their highest-ever Premier League position at the time. Wanyama played a crucial role in that resurgence, anchoring the midfield with strength and composure.
Why Wanyama is Heading Back
By the time he reunited with Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur in 2016, Wanyama had developed into one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders. He left Southampton after making 97 appearances, having firmly established his reputation in English football.
Now 34 and currently without a club following his departure from Dunfermline Athletic at the end of last season, Wanyama has accepted an invitation to feature in an upcoming legends fixture. Southampton supporters will once again have the opportunity to watch their former midfield enforcer in action.
On Saturday, March 28, St Mary’s Stadium will stage a Southampton Legends XI clash against Manchester United Legends. The event commemorates 50 years since Southampton’s historic 1976 FA Cup victory over Manchester United — still the club’s only triumph in the competition.
Star-Studded Line-Ups Confirmed
Wanyama will reunite with former teammates José Fonte and Rickie Lambert in the Southampton Legends squad. Andrew Surman and Jos Hooiveld are also confirmed, while iconic forward Matt Le Tissier is set to manage the side.
The Manchester United Legends team will feature notable names such as Dimitar Berbatov, Louis Saha and Wes Brown, promising an entertaining encounter for fans eager to relive past glories.
