The women’s mile is making a long-awaited return to the Prefontaine Classic after more than 30 years, with Faith Kipyegon leading a world-class lineup in Eugene.
The iconic race, absent from the meet since the early 1990s, will once again take center stage during the 2026 edition of the Wanda Diamond League. Scheduled for July 3–4 at Hayward Field, the event is expected to draw elite athletes from across the globe.
This appearance will mark Kipyegon’s 11th outing at the Prefontaine Classic, a competition where she has consistently delivered standout performances. During last year’s milestone 50th edition, she set a new 1,500m world record with an astonishing 3:48.68. Her mile world record of 4:07.64, achieved at the Monaco Diamond League in 2023, further cements her dominance in middle-distance running.
Women’s Mile Returns to the Spotlight
The Prefontaine Classic is known for rotating its event program to maintain excitement and attract top-tier talent. While the women’s 1,500m has remained a fixture for decades, the mile has not been featured since 1993.
With its return, expectations are high that the long-standing meet record of 4:21.25—set by Mary Slaney in 1988—could finally be surpassed. Given Kipyegon’s current form, many believe history could be made once again on the Hayward Field track.
Kipyegon’s Dominance in Middle-Distance Running
Widely regarded as one of the greatest 1,500m runners in history, Kipyegon has built an extraordinary career defined by consistency and excellence. She is a three-time Olympic champion (2016, 2021, 2024), an Olympic silver medalist (2024), and a four-time world champion in the event.
Her 2023 season was particularly historic, as she became the first woman to break three world records in a single year—an achievement that solidified her place among athletics legends.
Although the mile is not part of the Olympic or World Championship program, it remains a fan-favorite distance at elite meets such as those in London, Monaco, and Stockholm.
Kipyegon last competed over the mile at a special event organized by Nike in June 2025, where she aimed to become the first woman to run the distance in under four minutes. She clocked an unofficial 4:06.42—improving her own record—but the historic sub-four-minute barrier still stands.
