Harambee Stars winger Job Ochieng took a significant step in his career with his La Liga debut for Real Sociedad on Saturday, offering a promising glimpse of the attributes that could prove crucial for Kenya ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. His introduction to Spain’s top flight not only marked a personal milestone but also signaled his growing importance at both club and international level.
Ochieng became the third academy graduate to break into Real Sociedad’s senior team this season. Wearing the number 47 shirt, he came off the bench in the 63rd minute of the clash against Elche, replacing Guedes and earning his first appearance under head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. Notably, he is the first player promoted from the reserve side to feature for the senior squad in the current campaign.
After the match, Matarazzo explained the tactical thinking behind handing the Kenyan international his debut. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the American tactician pointed to Ochieng’s pace and work ethic as decisive factors. He emphasized that the game required a player capable of stretching the opposition and exploiting open spaces with speed.
According to Matarazzo, Ochieng’s acceleration and ability to make intelligent forward runs suited the demands of the moment. The coach also highlighted the winger’s sense of responsibility on the pitch, describing his introduction as a perfect fit for the team’s needs during that phase of the contest.
Job Ochieng: A Journey Built on Patience and Determination
Ochieng’s rise to the La Liga stage has been shaped by perseverance and steady development. Before reaching the first team, he spent several years progressing through Real Sociedad’s reserve ranks, steadily refining his game and earning the trust of the coaching staff.
His football journey began at the Ligi Ndogo academy in Kenya, where his potential first caught attention. Determined to support his ambitions, his family and neighbors pooled resources to fund his move abroad, with an understanding that the investment would be repaid should he secure a professional contract.
He later enrolled at a sports academy in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he impressed with his performances. However, financial challenges forced him to leave after struggling to meet the required fees, temporarily halting his progress.
A breakthrough arrived in 2020 when he joined Maspalomas, a club affiliated with Real Sociedad. His performances in the Canary Islands quickly stood out, and in 2022, an agency facilitated a move to the Basque outfit. Despite suffering an ankle injury shortly before his trial at the Zubieta training complex, he did enough to earn a contract with the club’s C team at just 19 years old.
Within a year, he secured promotion to Real Sociedad B and played an instrumental role in their ascent to the Spanish Second Division. This season, Ochieng has continued to impress in the Segunda División, scoring a decisive goal against Zaragoza on the opening day and adding another strike against Leganés.
For Benni McCarthy and the Harambee Stars technical bench, Ochieng’s pace, discipline, and resilience could become valuable assets as Kenya prepares for AFCON 2027 on home soil.
