Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could reportedly return to the dugout in the future, with the Germany national team job emerging as a possible destination amid growing questions about his long-term role with Red Bull.
Reports suggest Klopp may be a candidate to lead Germany after the next World Cup, with sources inside Red Bull fearing they could eventually lose their global head of football.
According to German publication Bild, it is widely believed within the company that Klopp may not be entirely fulfilled in his current position. The role, which he assumed in January last year after stepping down from Liverpool in 2024, is largely strategic and behind the scenes. Some insiders feel it does not fully utilise the leadership and motivational qualities that made him one of the most respected managers in world football.
Speculation has also been fuelled by Klopp’s recent public appearances. The 58-year-old has been spotted at major events such as the Winter Olympics rather than regularly attending matches involving Red Bull’s network of clubs. As a result, some within the organisation have begun to wonder whether he intends to remain in the position for the long term.
Reasons Klopp Could Return to the Touchline
Further discussion about a potential coaching comeback intensified after comments from Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, who highlighted the manager’s strong ties to his homeland.
“Jurgen feels very connected to this country,” Kosicke said last month, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I don’t think he believes he must take the job at least once. But he does feel a certain responsibility and may find it difficult to always turn it down.”
Klopp has previously rejected the opportunity to manage Germany, but his agent’s remarks suggest that the possibility cannot be ruled out in the future.
One major complication remains, however. Germany’s current coach, Julian Nagelsmann, is under contract until 2028. The 38-year-old took charge of the national team in 2023 and led them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where they were knocked out by eventual champions Spain.
Klopp Still Committed to Red Bull Project
Despite ongoing speculation, Klopp is tied to Red Bull through a contract that runs until 2029. Reports indicate that informal conversations have even taken place about potentially extending the agreement further.
So far, Klopp has not publicly suggested he wants to leave the position. The move to Red Bull was partly motivated by his desire to step away from the intense demands of weekly management after more than two decades on the sidelines.
When announcing his Liverpool departure in January 2024, he admitted that exhaustion played a role in his decision.
“I am, how can I say it, running out of energy,” Klopp explained at the time. “I know that I cannot keep doing the job again and again and again.”
After joining Red Bull, he also spoke about shifting his focus to a broader mission within the sport.
“I no longer need to improve the game in just one place,” Klopp said. “Instead, I want to help develop football globally — not preparing a new match every week, but concentrating on the bigger picture.”
