Kenya, Jamaica Seal Historic Olympic Collaboration Ahead of LA 2028

Kenya and Jamaica have entered into a groundbreaking Olympic partnership designed to boost sports development as preparations begin for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), paving the way for closer collaboration between the two nations in the lead-up to LA 2028.

The agreement was finalized in Kingston at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, where NOC-K President Shadrack Maluki and JOA President Christopher Samuda officiated the signing. This milestone formalizes a relationship that has existed informally for years between two of the world’s most dominant athletics nations.

Both countries bring unique strengths to the partnership. Jamaica is globally recognized for its sprinting excellence, while Kenya has built a strong legacy in middle- and long-distance running. By combining these areas of expertise, the collaboration aims to elevate performance standards for both nations on the international stage.

Maluki emphasized that the agreement is rooted in leveraging these complementary strengths to achieve shared success over the long term.

He noted that creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and technical collaboration would help both countries remain competitive globally, adding that uniting their strengths places them in a powerful position within international sport.

Athlete and Coach Exchange Programmes Take Centre Stage

A major component of the partnership is the introduction of structured exchange programmes for athletes and coaches from both countries.

Through this initiative, Jamaican athletes will have the opportunity to train in Kenya’s high-altitude regions, which are known to enhance endurance and performance. At the same time, Kenyan athletes will gain access to Jamaica’s advanced sprint training systems and highly competitive environment.

Maluki pointed out that the agreement builds on previous interactions between the two nations. In the past, Kenyan junior athletes have traveled to Jamaica to train and compete, including participation in the well-known ISSA GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.

He explained that the new deal takes that cooperation a step further by establishing a more structured and mutually beneficial framework.

According to Maluki, the goal is to ensure that the partnership works both ways, allowing Jamaican athletes to experience Kenya’s training conditions while Kenyan athletes continue to benefit from Jamaica’s sprint expertise. He added that the collaboration also promotes cultural exchange and strengthens ties beyond athletics.

Jamaica Targets Wider Sporting Growth

Christopher Samuda described the agreement as a forward-thinking move that could serve as a model for similar international collaborations.

He explained that the partnership aligns with broader efforts to enhance Olympic preparation while also strengthening athlete development systems across different sports.

Samuda noted that by combining resources, expertise, and ambition, both nations can unlock opportunities not only in track and field but also in other Olympic disciplines.

Multi-Sport Cooperation and Long-Term Ambitions

The MOU outlines collaboration across approximately six to seven sporting disciplines. The focus will be on improving technical expertise, raising coaching standards, and boosting athlete performance at elite levels.

Both NOC-K and JOA believe the partnership will extend beyond the 2028 Olympic cycle, delivering long-term benefits for athletes, coaches, and sporting institutions in both countries.
