Kenya has signaled that it would back a possible postponement of AFCON 2027 amid concerns tied to the country’s upcoming general elections and wider security issues.
As one of the three nations set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Kenya has acknowledged that delaying the tournament could be a practical option. The head of the local organising committee indicated that the timing of the competition may clash with sensitive political events, raising concerns about safety and stability.
The discussion follows a report by The Guardian claiming that the tournament could be pushed to 2028 due to slow preparations by co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
An inspection delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is currently touring the three East African nations to evaluate infrastructure progress and overall readiness.
Although CAF President Patrice Motsepe has previously voiced confidence that the tournament will proceed as planned in 2027, Kenyan officials appear to be weighing additional considerations beyond infrastructure timelines.
Nicholas Musonye Believes AFCON 2027 Postponement Would Be Good
Nicholas Musonye, chairman of Kenya’s Local Organising Committee, told AFP in remarks carried by New Vision that shifting the competition to 2028 “would be good for Kenya,” particularly because the country is expected to hold general elections in August 2027.
Musonye emphasized that election periods in the region have historically been tense. He pointed out that Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya have all experienced politically charged environments during national polls.
According to him, hosting a tournament of AFCON’s magnitude during such a period could create significant security challenges. Kenya’s own history includes episodes of election-related violence, notably in 2007 and 2017. In recent years, anti-government demonstrations have also resulted in casualties, underscoring concerns about public safety.
However, postponing the tournament would not be straightforward. AFCON is set to transition from its traditional biennial format to a four-year cycle after 2027, aligning it more closely with major continental competitions such as the European Championship and Copa America.
A 2028 edition is already penciled into the calendar, although a host nation has yet to be named. Any decision to move the 2027 event could therefore create scheduling and logistical complications for CAF.
Nicholas Musonye Issues Stern Warning
Beyond the question of timing, Musonye has urged cooperation from stakeholders and warned against destructive behavior in stadiums.
The temporary closure of major venues forms part of a broader plan to ensure Kenya is fully prepared to host the prestigious continental showpiece. Musonye explained that the Ministry of Sports, alongside Sports Kenya, is working to upgrade facilities to meet international standards following the recent 2024 CHAN tournament.
These improvements are likely to disrupt the domestic football calendar, with some top-flight clubs expected to relocate matches away from their usual Nairobi grounds.
Musonye appealed for understanding from football and rugby stakeholders, stressing that the temporary inconveniences are aimed at delivering a high-quality tournament that leaves a lasting legacy.
At the same time, he issued a firm warning to individuals involved in acts of stadium violence. He indicated that those responsible for vandalism could face bans from both Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium if such behavior continues.
He made it clear that authorities are prepared to take stronger action this time around, including restricting access to offenders in order to protect renovated facilities.
As part of the modernization efforts, Kasarani Stadium will undergo a major pitch upgrade, including the installation of a state-of-the-art hybrid surface. Meanwhile, the 18,000-seat Nyayo Stadium is scheduled to receive a canopy as both venues are elevated to world-class standards ahead of the tournament.
