Former Liverpool Coach Jürgen Klopp has hailed Mohamed Salah as one of the greatest players in Liverpool FC history, insisting the forward’s remarkable achievements may never be equaled.
Salah confirmed earlier this week that he will depart Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing to a close an extraordinary nine-year spell at Anfield. During his time at the club, the Egyptian forward rose to become Liverpool’s third all-time leading scorer, sitting behind club legends Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
Now 33, Salah has enjoyed immense success with Liverpool, winning major honors including the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup. Much of that success came under Klopp, who brought him to the club and played a key role in shaping his legacy.
Speaking during his return to Anfield for a charity fixture between Liverpool Legends and Borussia Dortmund Legends, Klopp expressed deep admiration for Salah’s impact.
“He’s right up there,” Klopp said. “I can only really judge based on the players I’ve worked with, but during my time at Liverpool, he’s certainly among the very best. You don’t even need me to say it—his numbers speak for themselves.”
Salah’s statistics underline Klopp’s praise. Across 435 appearances, he has scored 255 goals and registered 119 assists—figures that place him firmly among the elite in modern football.
According to Klopp, those achievements may remain untouched for years to come. “The numbers he’s produced and the standards he’s set are incredible,” he said. “In today’s Premier League, it’s almost impossible to replicate what he has done. Some of those records could stand for a very long time.”
Beyond his on-field brilliance, Klopp also highlighted Salah’s professionalism and mental strength. The German coach noted how the forward managed the pressures that come with being a top-level striker, including constant scrutiny and criticism.
“He played a huge role in the team’s success while also maintaining his own individual excellence, which isn’t easy,” Klopp explained. “Strikers are always judged harshly, but he handled that pressure in an exceptional way. He stayed true to himself throughout.”
Klopp also reflected on their personal relationship, describing Salah as not just a great player, but an outstanding individual. “He’s one of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with and one of the best people I’ve met,” he said. “We’ve had our disagreements, but they always came from a good place. Looking back now, it’s all part of a very special journey we shared.”
With Salah set to become a free agent at the end of the campaign, uncertainty surrounds his next destination. While his agent has indicated that no decision has been made, there is strong interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia ahead of the summer transfer window.
Klopp believes, however, that Salah still has plenty to offer at the highest level. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he plays another six or seven years,” he added. “His dedication is unmatched. He’s set new benchmarks for professionalism—whether it’s training, recovery, or preparation. If something could help him improve, he would learn about it instantly and apply it right away.”
Robertson Weighs In: Dalglish Still Liverpool’s Greatest
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson also paid tribute to Salah, describing him as one of the club’s all-time greats—though he stopped short of calling him the very best.
Earlier in the week, Robertson sparked debate with a social media post that appeared to label Salah as “the greatest.” However, he later clarified his stance while on international duty, placing Kenny Dalglish slightly ahead.
“I think he’s definitely one of the greatest,” Robertson said. “But for me, Kenny Dalglish just edges it. I remind Mo of that quite often. Kenny is the greatest player Scotland has ever produced and, in my opinion, Liverpool’s greatest as well.”
Robertson went on to emphasize the elite company Salah now keeps in Liverpool’s history. Alongside Dalglish, he mentioned iconic figures such as Steven Gerrard and Ian Rush, noting that Salah’s inclusion in that group is a testament to his impact.
“To even be mentioned alongside players like Dalglish, Gerrard, and Rush is a huge achievement,” Robertson added. “It shows just how much he’s contributed over the last nine years.”
The Scottish defender also expressed his full support for Salah’s decision to leave Anfield, acknowledging the forward’s immense contribution since arriving in 2017.
“It’s been an honor to play with him,” Robertson said. “Not just as a teammate, but as a close friend. We’ve shared so many great moments over the years.”
As Salah prepares to say goodbye, Robertson admitted the departure will be emotional for the squad and supporters alike. Still, he is confident the forward will receive the recognition he deserves.
“It will be a sad farewell, but he’ll get the send-off he’s earned,” Robertson concluded. “He’s not just a Premier League legend—he’s a Liverpool legend through and through.”
