Manchester City celebrated Pep Guardiola’s milestone 1,000th match in management with a dominant 3-0 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, climbing to second place in the Premier League table.

Erling Haaland missed an early penalty when Giorgi Mamardashvili denied him from the spot, but the Norwegian quickly redeemed himself by heading home his 99th Premier League goal to give City the lead. With Jeremy Doku running riot down the wings, Liverpool simply couldn’t match the hosts’ intensity or precision.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot was left frustrated when Virgil van Dijk’s first-half equalizer was disallowed for offside after Andrew Robertson was deemed to be interfering in play. But the scoreline soon reflected City’s superiority, as Nico González’s deflected effort in first-half stoppage time doubled their advantage.

In the second half, Doku capped his electrifying performance with a stunning strike that sealed a memorable win for Guardiola’s men. The Belgian winger, already the standout performer on the pitch, added the finishing touch to a display that underlined his growing importance in City’s attacking arsenal.

The win moved City ahead of Chelsea and into second place, just four points behind leaders Arsenal, who dropped points in a draw at Sunderland. On this performance, it’s clear that City pose the biggest threat to Mikel Arteta’s title hopes.

Doku Proves City’s Attack Isn’t All About Haaland

Before the match, one quirky statistic revealed that City’s second-highest Premier League scorer this season was Burnley’s Maxime Estève, courtesy of two own goals he conceded during City’s 5-1 win in September.

That stat remains true for now, as both Nico and Doku netted their first league goals of the campaign in this fixture. Yet City’s performance, particularly Doku’s brilliance, proved that Guardiola’s side are far from reliant on Haaland alone.

The 22-year-old winger was involved in almost every dangerous move. Whether weaving through Liverpool’s defense in tight spaces or charging into open grass on the counter, Doku’s pace and creativity tore apart the visitors’ backline. His fearless dribbling and direct play gave City an extra dimension that Liverpool could not contain.

Since April, no Premier League side has collected more points than Manchester City, and their current form serves as a stark warning to Arsenal. For all the talk about City slowing down this season, this performance suggested quite the opposite, they’re once again hitting their stride just as the title race intensifies.

Liverpool’s Revival Comes to a Halt

For Liverpool, this result was a sobering reminder of the gulf that still exists between them and Guardiola’s reigning juggernauts. Coming into the match on the back of encouraging victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid, Slot’s team were overwhelmed from start to finish in Manchester.

Slot has previously admitted that managing a busy schedule has been challenging for his squad, yet he opted to stick with the same starting lineup rather than rotate fresh legs into the side. That decision backfired as Liverpool struggled to cope with City’s relentless tempo.

Florian Wirtz looked tidy in possession but rarely threatened in key areas, while Hugo Ekitike was largely anonymous up front. Mohamed Salah’s dip in form also continued, with the Egyptian forward unable to influence proceedings. At the back, defensive lapses and sluggish positioning once again cost Liverpool dearly.

While a few refereeing calls went against them, this wasn’t one of those narrow, hard-luck defeats that defined earlier games. Instead, it was a comprehensive loss, seeing as this is their seventh defeat in 10 matches across all competitions, thus leaving the champions languishing in eighth place and facing tough questions about their direction.

Slot Frustrated by Disallowed Goal

After the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot voiced his anger about the decision to disallow Van Dijk’s equalizer, believing Robertson had not affected the play.

“I think it’s quite clear the wrong decision was made,” Slot told Sky Sports. “Robertson didn’t interfere at all with what the goalkeeper could do. I was shown a clip right after the game of a very similar situation and the same referee allowed John Stones’ goal for City against Wolves last season.”

Slot added that the linesman took nearly 13 seconds to raise his flag, suggesting a communication issue between officials.

“That call could have changed the momentum for us,” he continued. “We were poor in the first half, no doubt, but being 1-1 instead of 1-0 down might have given us a lift. Still, I can’t say how the second half would have gone, City were excellent, and we didn’t deserve much based on our display.”

Manchester City’s 3-0 win not only marked Guardiola’s landmark match but also served as a statement of intent. With Doku shining brightly, Haaland continuing to find the net, and the team hitting form at the right time, City look poised once again to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League crown.
