Former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is now reportedly open to taking over as Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach with immediate effect, according to reports from Italy.
Sky Italia suggests that discussions are expected between De Zerbi and Tottenham over a proposed five-year deal. The north London club is actively searching for yet another managerial appointment following the departure of Igor Tudor on Sunday.
Tottenham are keen to stabilise their season after a turbulent spell, having already gone through multiple coaching changes. Their preference, according to Sky Sports News, is to bring in a long-term solution rather than another short-term fix after Tudor’s disappointing stint, which lasted just 44 days and included seven matches.
For several weeks, Tottenham have been evaluating multiple candidates, including accelerating the arrival of a manager initially targeted for the summer. Among the names under consideration, De Zerbi features prominently alongside former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and other potential options.
Italian Coach Reconsiders Immediate Return to Management
De Zerbi became available after parting ways with Marseille in February. Initially, reports indicated that the 46-year-old was not planning to return to management before the end of the current campaign.
The Italian tactician had reportedly intended to take time away from the game to carefully assess his next move during the summer. However, recent developments suggest that his stance may have shifted, and he is now willing to step back into management sooner than expected.
This change of heart comes at a crucial time for Tottenham, who find themselves battling to stay clear of relegation. Spurs are currently just one point above the drop zone with only seven Premier League fixtures remaining.
The situation marks one of the most challenging periods in the club’s recent history, as they aim to avoid relegation from the top flight for the first time since 1977. Their upcoming clash against Sunderland on April 12 could prove pivotal in their survival fight.
De Zerbi’s Premier League Pedigree Strengthens His Case
A return to English football would not be unfamiliar territory for De Zerbi. He previously managed Brighton & Hove Albion for nearly two seasons, earning widespread praise for his attacking style of play and tactical innovation.
During his time at Brighton, he guided the club to their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing sixth place in the 2022/23 season. That achievement also saw the Seagulls qualify for European competition for the first time in their history.
In the following campaign, Brighton finished 11th while also reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League. Despite those accomplishments, De Zerbi chose to leave the club at the end of the season.
He then took charge of Marseille in the summer of 2024. However, his time in France proved short-lived. The Italian departed by mutual consent after the team’s exit from the Champions League group stage and a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
At the time of his departure, Marseille were sitting fourth in Ligue 1, having finished as runners-up to PSG in the previous season.
Fan Groups Voice Strong Opposition to Potential Appointment
Despite his managerial credentials, De Zerbi’s possible appointment has sparked concern among several Tottenham supporter groups.
Three fan organisations—Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach—have publicly urged the club to reconsider hiring the Italian due to his previous comments regarding Marseille forward Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, faced serious charges in October 2022, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in February 2023, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and insufficient prospects of conviction.
The player later resumed his career and joined Marseille in 2024, where he worked under De Zerbi.
In November, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a “good guy” who had “paid a heavy price,” adding that his personal experience with the player differed from the public narrative.
Supporters Highlight Concerns Over Club Values and Leadership
Proud Lilywhites, Tottenham’s LGBTQI+ supporters group, expressed unease about the potential appointment. In a statement, they emphasised that their concerns go beyond footballing matters and relate to the club’s identity and values.
They argued that leadership decisions should reflect accountability and uphold the standards that Tottenham claims to represent. The group stressed that progress in making football more inclusive must not be compromised.
Similarly, Women of the Lane voiced concerns about how De Zerbi’s past remarks could be perceived, particularly in relation to issues affecting women. They questioned whether such views align with the level of judgement and leadership expected at the club.
Spurs Reach also released a statement criticising comments attributed to De Zerbi. The group warned that such remarks risk downplaying serious issues and could send the wrong message within the sport.
Collectively, these fan groups have made it clear that while they want Tottenham to move forward, they believe it is equally important for the club to do so in a way that aligns with its stated values.
Spurs Face Critical Decision in Defining Moment
As Tottenham weigh their options, the decision over their next head coach carries significant implications both on and off the pitch.
On one hand, De Zerbi offers a proven track record in the Premier League and a reputation for progressive football. On the other, his potential appointment has triggered a broader debate about leadership, accountability, and the image of the club.
With relegation looming and time running out in the season, Spurs must act quickly—but also carefully. The choice they make could shape not only their immediate future but also how they are perceived by their supporters and the wider football community.
