Raila Bids Farewell to Harambee Stars Forward Ryan Ogam as He Departs for Austria

On Friday, September 12, 2025, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga hosted a send-off for Harambee Stars striker Ryan Ogam, who is set to begin a new chapter with Austrian Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC.

The event, held at Raila’s Capitol Hill office, was attended by Ogam’s parents, Daudi Rabok Obonyo, who is also the chairperson of the Starehe ODM branch, and Edith Atieno Oderah. Together with Raila, they marked the milestone as the young forward prepared to embark on his European journey.

A Look at Ryan Ogam Career

Tusker FC, Ogam’s former side, confirmed the transfer earlier this month, calling it a significant step for one of Kenya’s brightest footballing prospects. At only 20 years old, Ogam has already built an impressive reputation. His performances at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he scored twice, earned him recognition beyond Kenya’s borders. He later stood out in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including a disallowed but widely discussed goal against Madagascar.

Raila commended Ogam’s progress, sharing on X: “I bid farewell to Ryan Ogam as he heads to Austria. His scoring ability at CHAN and the World Cup qualifiers brought pride to Kenya.” He also emphasized the wider importance of athletics, noting that sport is a growing sector with the power to transform the nation’s economy.

Warm Welcome in Austria

At Wolfsberger AC, Ogam joins a club with European experience, having featured in the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League group stage. The club’s president, Dietmar Riegler, welcomed the Kenyan forward, saying: “We are excited to bring Ryan on board. He is a talented young striker, and we have followed his progress with Tusker and Harambee Stars closely. His potential is clear, and we believe he can strengthen our squad.”

Currently placed sixth in the Austrian Bundesliga, Wolfsberger AC intends to gradually blend Ogam into its attacking lineup as he adapts to the new environment and style of play.

Kenya’s Pride Abroad

Ogam leaves the country in excellent form, having scored twice during Kenya’s 5-0 win over Seychelles at Kasarani on September 9, in a game where captain Michael Olunga also netted twice. Speaking about his senior teammate, Ogam said: “I’m eager to learn from Olunga. His movement and finishing are exceptional, and he has been a great mentor.”

As Ogam takes this next big step, Raila’s parting words reflected the optimism of the moment: “Wishing him success as he begins this exciting new phase in his career.”
