The construction of Samia Suluhu Stadium in Arusha has reached a significant milestone, reflecting Tanzania’s growing momentum as it prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Authorities have confirmed that the ambitious project is now approximately 70 percent complete, with confidence high that the venue will be fully ready ahead of the continental tournament.
Arusha Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla announced that work on the modern facility remains on track, emphasizing the government’s strong commitment to delivering a world-class sports complex. He shared the update during an inspection tour led by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, who visited the region to assess the pace and quality of construction.
According to Makalla, the progress achieved so far demonstrates that the project timeline is being carefully observed. Officials believe the stadium will be completed within the projected timeframe, ensuring it is operational well before Tanzania welcomes Africa’s biggest football competition.
Named in honour of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the stadium is set to become a transformative landmark for Arusha. Beyond serving as a football venue, it is envisioned as a multipurpose complex capable of hosting large-scale national and international sporting events. Leaders see it as a strategic investment aimed at elevating the region’s profile within Tanzania and across the continent.
The facility is being developed to meet international standards, incorporating extensive seating capacity, a high-quality playing surface, and modern amenities tailored for athletes, match officials, media personnel, and spectators. Project supervisors have stressed that strict quality control measures are in place to guarantee that construction standards are not compromised as the deadline approaches.
Apart from strengthening the country’s sporting infrastructure, the stadium is expected to generate meaningful economic benefits. Authorities anticipate job creation during and after construction, increased sports tourism, and expanded opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Small businesses, hospitality operators, and service providers are all likely to benefit from the surge in activity tied to both the stadium’s completion and the AFCON tournament.
As the finishing phase draws nearer, excitement continues to build among sports enthusiasts in Arusha and beyond. Many residents believe the new facility will play a crucial role in nurturing young talent and providing a professional platform for local athletes to showcase their abilities.
Arusha Signals Full Readiness for AFCON 2027
In parallel with the stadium’s progress, Arusha has declared its readiness to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. City authorities, working closely with sports governing bodies and other stakeholders, have affirmed that preparations are well advanced and aligned with hosting requirements.
Officials point to Arusha’s strategic geographic position, steadily improving infrastructure, and established hospitality sector as major strengths. The city expects to welcome teams, officials, media representatives, and thousands of supporters from across the continent during the tournament.
Recent upgrades have focused on improving road networks linking key facilities, strengthening security arrangements, and expanding accommodation capacity. Hotels and guesthouses are preparing for higher occupancy rates, while transport services are being enhanced to ensure smooth mobility for visitors.
The stadium itself is undergoing final refinements to ensure compliance with Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, in collaboration with the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF). These adjustments are aimed at meeting technical, safety, and operational standards required for hosting elite continental fixtures.
Local business leaders and tourism stakeholders view AFCON 2027 as a significant opportunity to showcase Tanzania’s culture and hospitality on a global stage. Industry players anticipate a boost in tourism revenue as football fans explore Arusha’s attractions alongside attending matches.
Community leaders have emphasized that the tournament represents more than just sport. It offers a platform to promote national unity, celebrate Tanzanian heritage, and strengthen the country’s reputation as a capable host of major international events.
With construction nearing completion and logistical preparations advancing steadily, Arusha appears firmly positioned to play a central role in delivering a successful and memorable AFCON 2027 tournament.
