Tanzania is gaining momentum in its preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, unveiling an ambitious sports and tourism project that could place the country ahead of its East African co-hosts.
As Tanzania prepares to co-host the tournament, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has announced a major investment of about KSh 19 billion (TSh 388.8 billion) to develop a modern sports and tourism complex known as Afcon City.
The project will be built in Fumba on Unguja Island and is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring the region is fully prepared for Africa’s biggest football competition. Beyond the tournament, the initiative is also expected to strengthen Zanzibar’s tourism industry and stimulate wider economic activity.
Afcon City is planned as a comprehensive facility capable of hosting teams, officials, and fans arriving from across the continent. The complex will feature modern training areas, accommodation spaces, and other essential infrastructure designed to improve the overall experience for visitors.
Authorities believe the project will eventually evolve into a landmark attraction, further positioning Zanzibar as a globally recognized travel destination.
Progress on Afcon City Construction
Tanzania has already made notable progress in transforming the Afcon City concept into reality. According to Riziki Pembe Juma, the construction phase is advancing steadily and the project has currently reached about 35 percent completion.
Work on the site includes the installation of steel frameworks, reinforcement of structural elements, and the development of wall structures that will form the core of the facility.
Juma noted that the steady progress demonstrates the government’s determination to be fully ready when the continent gathers for the 2027 tournament.
Top-Level Facilities for Participating Teams
Teams scheduled to play matches in Zanzibar will benefit from access to elite training venues, including the New Amaan Complex and the Suluhu Academy.
Officials say Afcon City is designed with a broader vision that goes beyond football. The project is expected to support tourism growth while offering new opportunities for businesses across hospitality, entertainment, and services.
Minister Juma encouraged local residents and entrepreneurs to prepare for the commercial opportunities that will arise once the complex becomes operational. The government expects the development to generate employment, encourage new investments, and contribute to long-term economic expansion in Zanzibar.
Authorities also believe the benefits of the project will extend well beyond the duration of the tournament, creating a lasting legacy for the region.
Tanzania Takes Early Lead in Regional Preparations
Tanzania will jointly host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda, with games planned for cities such as Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar City.
However, the scale of investment in Afcon City and the pace at which construction is progressing appear to place Tanzania slightly ahead of its regional partners in terms of infrastructure development, training capacity, and fan facilities.
The project highlights Tanzania’s growing ambition to strengthen its position in African football while also expanding its sports tourism sector.
Officials believe the initiative will play a significant role in shaping Zanzibar into a major destination for sporting events and international travel. By combining football infrastructure with tourism development, the country aims to attract supporters, investors, and visitors long after the AFCON tournament ends.
