Harambee Stars icon Victor Wanyama has finally shed light on the difficult circumstances that pushed him to retire from professional football. The veteran midfielder confirmed that ongoing physical struggles played a major role in his decision to step away from the game earlier than he would have preferred.
Wanyama officially announced his retirement on Friday, bringing an end to a remarkable 19-year career. The 34-year-old enjoyed spells across multiple countries, including Kenya, Sweden, Belgium, Scotland, England, and the United States. Despite reaching an age where many players remain competitive at the top level, he admitted that his body could no longer cope with the demands of the game.
Although he had been considering retirement in recent months, Wanyama revealed that he still believed he had more to offer on the pitch. However, persistent physical discomfort ultimately made it impossible for him to continue playing at a high level.
Lingering Knee Issues That Shaped His Final Years
In an interview with Daily Mail, Wanyama explained that his troubles began back in 2017 following a pre-season match at Wembley Stadium. The injury, which involved damaged knee cartilage, kept him sidelined for more than four months and marked the start of a long battle with pain.
After returning to action, the problem resurfaced during a match against Chelsea FC, further complicating his recovery. Known for his physical and combative style of play, Wanyama had to carefully manage the condition throughout the remainder of his career.
In his later seasons, the midfielder relied heavily on recovery methods such as icing, rest, and anti-inflammatory treatments just to stay match-fit. Over time, however, the strain became increasingly difficult to handle, ultimately influencing his decision to retire for the sake of his long-term health.
Turning the Page: Wanyama Sets Sights on Coaching Career
Reflecting on his journey, Wanyama admitted that stepping away was the only sensible option after years of enduring discomfort. He emphasised that he did not want to continue putting his body through constant strain.
With his playing days now behind him, Wanyama is turning his attention to life off the pitch. He is actively working toward a future in coaching, having already completed his UEFA B License in Northern Ireland. The former midfielder is now aiming to secure his UEFA A License as he continues his development.
Based in Nairobi, Wanyama is currently involved in grassroots football through his foundation, where he mentors and trains young players. He views youth development as the ideal starting point for his coaching journey before progressing to higher levels.
Looking ahead, Wanyama remains ambitious about his next chapter. The former Celtic FC, Southampton FC, Tottenham Hotspur, and CF Montréal midfielder has already initiated conversations with several clubs in London regarding potential academy roles.
His ultimate goal is clear—Wanyama hopes to build a successful coaching career in Europe, marking the beginning of a new journey after an accomplished playing career.
