Wanyama Endorses Benni McCarthy as Harambee Stars Build Momentum Toward AFCON 2027

Former Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama has voiced strong support for Benni McCarthy, expressing confidence in his ability to guide Harambee Stars to success at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Wanyama, a key figure in Kenya’s football history, has applauded the progress made under McCarthy, pointing to noticeable improvements in the team’s overall structure and style of play.

McCarthy, a South African football legend, officially took charge of Harambee Stars in March 2025 after being appointed by the Football Kenya Federation. He replaced Engin Fırat and was tasked with elevating the national team’s technical standards while also widening the player scouting network.

Since his appointment, expectations have been high, but early signs suggest the team is moving in the right direction.

Wanyama Highlights Tactical Progress Under McCarthy

Speaking during an interview on Pitchside With Tabu Peter, Wanyama noted that Harambee Stars are beginning to reflect McCarthy’s football philosophy on the pitch.

According to him, the team is gradually developing a clear identity, with players showing a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities in different phases of the game.

He pointed out that there is improved organisation across the squad, with more discipline in defensive positioning and greater cohesion when transitioning into attack. The players also appear more comfortable executing structured build-up play, something that had been inconsistent in the past.

Wanyama further observed that Harambee Stars are now playing with higher intensity. Their pressing game has become more coordinated, while their ability to retain possession and move the ball forward with intent has significantly improved.

In his view, these changes are evidence that McCarthy’s tactical ideas are taking root within the squad.

“He has done a really good job. You can now clearly see the style of play he wants, how the team builds up, and how the players connect on the pitch,” Wanyama explained.
“The high line, pressing, and forward movement are all coming together. It’s clear the team is adapting well to his system.”

Emerging Talent and Strong Leadership Driving Growth

Wanyama also highlighted the growing pool of young talent within the Harambee Stars setup. He believes the presence of hungry and ambitious players is playing a crucial role in the team’s recent improvements.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder emphasized that McCarthy’s leadership has created an environment where players can develop and showcase their abilities on the international stage.

He noted that the squad now looks more united, with a shared sense of purpose and commitment. This unity, combined with better tactical awareness, is helping the team steadily evolve into a competitive side.

Additionally, Wanyama praised efforts to reintegrate previously overlooked players into the national setup. He explained that expanding the selection pool gives the coach more flexibility while also motivating players to perform consistently.

“There’s clear improvement, and hopefully it continues. With time, we can have a strong, settled team ready to make the country proud,” he added.
“Bringing back players who were left out is important. It increases competition and pushes everyone to work harder.”

AFCON 2027 Presents a Defining Opportunity

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to take place between June 19 and July 18, the focus is now on building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

Wanyama’s endorsement adds weight to the belief that McCarthy is the right man for the job. However, expectations will only grow as the tournament approaches.

For McCarthy, the challenge lies in maintaining the current momentum while continuing to refine the team’s tactical approach. Consistency, squad depth, and experience will be key factors if Harambee Stars are to make a meaningful impact on the continental stage.

There is a growing sense of optimism among fans and former players alike. If the current trajectory continues, Harambee Stars could emerge as a well-organised, confident, and competitive team by the time AFCON 2027 arrives.

With strong leadership, improving performances, and increasing belief within the camp, Kenya’s national team appears to be on a promising path toward achieving its long-term ambitions.
