Ogam Opens Account at Wolfsberger AC but Questions Remain

Harambee Stars forward Ryan Ogam has finally broken his scoring drought in Austria after netting twice for Wolfsberger AC on Saturday. However, the goals came for the club’s reserve side, sparking renewed debate about his progress since moving to Europe.

The 21-year-old striker struck in a Regional League Central fixture against St. Anna/Aigen, registering his first goals since sealing a transfer from Tusker FC last September. While the brace offers encouragement, it has done little to silence concerns as he remains on the fringes of the senior squad.

Ogam arrived in Austria carrying significant expectations. After scoring 15 league goals for Tusker and shining for Harambee Stars at the 2024 CHAN tournament, many supporters believed he would transition smoothly into top-tier European football.

He made his Austrian Bundesliga debut on October 4 during a 3-1 victory over Graz AK 1902, coming off the bench for the final 14 minutes. That cameo generated excitement among Kenyan fans, but it proved to be only a brief introduction to senior action.

Following two more substitute appearances in the league and 46 minutes in an Austrian Cup clash against SKU Amstetten, Ogam’s involvement with the first team dwindled. He has not featured in the Austrian Bundesliga since November and has missed all four league fixtures played in 2026 so far.

Uncertain Path to the First Team

Reports later indicated that Ogam had been reassigned to the reserve team, though the exact reasons remain unclear. It is uncertain whether the decision stems from adaptation challenges, tactical preferences, or stiff competition within the squad.

Since his arrival, Wolfsberger AC have worked under three different head coaches, yet none has entrusted him with consistent minutes at senior level. The lack of continuity has further complicated his quest to establish himself.

Despite the setbacks, Ogam is widely regarded as a future focal point in the Harambee Stars attack and a potential long-term successor to Michael Olunga. With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations approaching, regular top-flight action will be crucial for his development and confidence.

For now, his brace at reserve level provides a glimmer of hope. Still, for Kenyan supporters and national team coach Benni McCarthy, the priority is clear — Ryan Ogam must secure meaningful minutes in the Austrian Bundesliga rather than remain a spectator.
